One of the gems that I caught from Ryan’s sermon on Sunday was the line about “The right thing at the wrong time can make it the wrong thing.” It reminded me of all the times I’ve played Rock, Paper, Scissors with Sam Lai. Let me explain:
One of the things I love about playing Rock, Paper, Scissors with Sam Lai is that he always goes Rock. Like, he even says he’s going to go Rock and for a second you think he’s trying to fake you out but he actually just goes Rock.
Now let me ask you a question, Which is better Rock, Paper, or Scissors? If you answered it depends, then you’re right.
We know that Rock beats Scissors but loses to Paper.
We know that Scissors beats Paper but loses to Rock.
We know that Paper beats Rock but loses to Scissors.
So why did Sam choose Rock, knowing all these things?
Have you ever heard the saying Rock always wins, well Sam believes that to be true. I think he also does it for jokes but the funny thing is even after losing with Rock many times he still chooses Rock.
Sometimes in life we approach things and situations like Sam and choose Rock when the situation actually calls for Scissors or Paper. We get stuck in our ideologies of what is best that we refuse to adjust. I believe our ability to succeed in things has a lot to do with our ability to adjust. To be able to adjust our mindset, our plans, and our feelings. To move from one to another as the situation presents itself.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve refused to adjust my feelings towards something or someone, refuse to change my mindset, and even refuse to adjust to God’s plans. But time and time again, I respond in the same way expecting to come out on top even though I’m the one needing to change. I often choose what is right in my eyes, forgetting to consider the time, the situation, the circumstance and even the season.
Humans are habitual people but just like life, there is good and bad to everything and even more importantly there is a season for everything. Sometimes the same thing that has won us battles before can be the same thing that loses us the war.
When we can pivot and adjust to our surroundings, circumstances, situations that try to derail us in life we have a better chance of achieving success. It is our inability to adjust to the things of life that cause us to stumble.
I heard a quote that said “Having a bad day is not going to change your life but having a bad habit will.”
Choosing Rock isn’t the problem…Having a Bad Habit of Choosing Rock is…
