In previous LifeSpring events like the Kidz Harbour Christmas play, Volunteer Appreciation Barbecue, and others, I would usually play a central role in setup or at least running something. For the Wildfire Fundraiser, however, I didn’t want to take care of a table because I knew I’d also be supervising the kids in the gym that same afternoon.
With that in mind, I spread out all the tasks that needed to be done on Sunday amongst Wildfire, and just did the planning and tech support throughout the week. Even with that, two other people were helping me brainstorm and plan. On Sunday, I simply helped people find things and took care of a couple of items.
This tied in so well with this week’s Lead Well lesson, which was about Delegation and Discipleship. It explained the reasons for delegation, things that hinder it, and how to delegate wisely, as well as how delegation can help facilitate discipleship. One of the points that stood out was “it can seem easier and quicker to do things ourselves.”
Throughout this past week, I was definitely thinking of more than a few times. I thought I could do a lot more than what I was actually capable of doing given our short timeframe plus a lot of mistakes. There were moments when I thought I should take over from someone, but I realized that I had to trust that everyone would take care of their assignment.
In the end, the fundraiser went quite well on Sunday. Each person had their role in food and setup, and most had tasks suited for their strengths. Everyone was quite capable of holding down the fort together, but it took me (and our Wildfire leaders) stepping back to give them that opportunity for responsibility and growth.
