The Lifespring family is indeed blessed. Dr. Siang Yang Tan has published 17 books, been a pastor since 1983, and was even in charge of Fuller Seminary’s counselling department. With such a resume, any church would be happy to have him minister to them. Yet, even with a resume like his – the greatest gift Siang-Yang brings to the family of Lifespring is friendship, fellowship, and genuine care for Lifespring. He genuinely cares for this family.
As Siang-Yang was speaking, he highlighted from 1 Peter 5 that Peter distinguished very clearly that He, his spiritual son – Mark, and his faithful brother – Silas were all in this journey together. He made it clear that it was a family of relationships that encouraged and testified about the grace and goodness of God.
As I listened to Siang Yang speak, in the middle of his message he paused, looked at his friend – Danny Chia – and made a joke about him. I couldn’t help but laugh because it felt so similar. During covid, while everyone was online, Pastor Alvin sent me a text message to encourage me. I responded with a heartfelt thank you and immediately I got a text back from Pastor Alvin telling me to “pay attention”.
One of the most encouraging things, to me, when speaking from the front on the pulpit is when I look out – I don’t see strangers, I see faithful brothers and sisters, fathers, and mothers… I see a Kingdom Family. Jesus doesn’t make us slaves of the Kingdom, He calls us sons in the Kingdom. Being in friendship and fellowship is crucial in our journey of maturity, it is not good to have – it is essential in the walk of faith.
For those who recognize the gift of family at Lifespring – prayerfully ask how you can share that gift. It has been instrumental in my walk of faith – as we have received, let us also give.
