Fix Our Eyes on Jesus

Fix Our Eyes on Jesus

Hebrews 12:1-2 (NIV)
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

The first word “Therefore” indicates a link to the previous chapter. Chapter 11 is the hall of fame filled with heroes of faith that went ahead of us. They are listed as our “great cloud of witnesses.” We, being surrounded by these witnesses gives a picture that they are cheering us on in our own race.

Paul used the metaphor of a race to describe our journey with the Lord. How then are we to run? First, we have to throw off everything that hinders us.

Question: what are somethings that may hinder you from running this race?

For me, I’m thinking of things like my own hopes, dreams, pursuits, etc. Paul says to “throw” them “off” – strong words. We only throw off things that are of no value. We have to discern and evaluate what are some things that we think are valuable which actually are hindrances in this race.

Second, “and the sin that so easily entangles.” The meaning of “entangle” – cause to become twisted together with or caught in. Any sin in our lives could get us caught in situations from which it is difficult to escape. As such, sin will derail, distract or delay us from completing the race.

Question: Do you have sin that may entangle you in the race?

Third, we need to run with perseverance. Paul hinted that this race was no easy endeavour. The marathon of life is definitely long and uncertain. We never know what is to come round the next corner. But we are to continue running and to run with endurance.

Fourth, in every race, there is a destination. What is the destination? Hebrews 11:16 – “Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.” We run to reach a place that is reserved for us by the Lord Himself. (John 14:2). This is definitely a race worth running for!

Presently, as we each try to adjust to the lock-down situation, our feelings may fluctuate from one end to the other. In order to run the marathon of life well, we need to fix our eyes on the right target. The world will advise you to fix your eyes on your goal, your destination. But God says to fix your eyes on a Person – Jesus. No one else. And nothing else. Why?

Jesus is the Pioneer and Perfecter of our faith. Another name of God. What does this name signify? He is the Pioneer – our Forerunner. He has gone ahead and shows us it is possible; it is do-able. On top of that, He will give us strength to go on. (Phil 4:13)

He is the Perfecter of our faith – Hebrews 10:14 NKJ – “by one offering (sacrifice) He (Jesus) has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.”

(NLT) – “For by that one offering He forever made perfect those who are being made holy.” Christ’s work is completed. Jesus has already perfected us!

One commentary explains – We need to look to Jesus because He is the basis, means and fulfilment of faith … Continuing with the race imagery, He has cleared the path of faith so that we may run it. The way is open, and although hurdles exist, the roadblocks have been removed.”

My favourite is verse 2b – “For the joy set before Him …” Do you know what is this joy? It’s you and me! Because He sees us coming into God’s kingdom through His sacrifice, therefore He endured the cross, and did not care about the shame. He only cared for our salvation! What love! What passion!

Question: He loves you enough to endure the cross. Do you love Him enough to endure the race?

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, thank you for Your perfect Sacrifice that bought me salvation so rich and free!  Thank you for loving me so much that you are willing to endure the cross. Remind me always to fix my eyes on You, the Pioneer and Perfecter of my faith. Help me to persevere and endure to the end. Amen.
