I won’t lie, this devo was inspired by a song. So if you’re thinking of an Elevation song called, “Same God”… you’re very right to do so!
The first time I heard it I was actually a little annoyed by it … it was too wordy and hard to follow and why is it so long?!
But, as the Lord often does, the Spirit of God began to shift around and soften my perspective; showing me instead how this song connects closely to what he’s been showing me about his faithfulness.
As a lover of time travel and other such mysteries, the fact that God is beyond time and space and yet intimately involved in our lives boggles my mind. Completely. It makes no sense and yet it’s also a major part of the foundation my faith is built upon.
Psalm 18 begins with David talking about the Lord as his rock.
I love you, Lord, my strength.
The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise,
and I have been saved from my enemies.
The cords of death entangled me;
the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me.
The cords of the grave coiled around me;
the snares of death confronted me.In my distress I called to the Lord;
psalm 18:1-6
I cried to my God for help.
From his temple he heard my voice;
my cry came before him, into his ears.
The Scriptures show us that David sang the words of this song to the Lord when he had delivered David from the hands of his enemies and from the hands of King Saul.
The Same God who delivered David and spared his life, is the same God who made a covenant with Abraham and his descendants. That same God is the one who called Moses to deliver those very same descendants out of slavery, bringing them up into an entirely new reality in the land promised to their forefathers.
The same God who wove together the stories of his people all the way back through the ages, is the same God working in our lives today; weaving us in with his people and connecting us to future generations in ways our boggle-able minds could never comprehend.
May faith begin to rise up within each of us as we consider the words of David’s psalm
along with the words of a more recent song of praise…
May spirit, soul and body unite in worship of our Triune God.
May our hearts be stirred and our minds boggled as God meets us in our praise.
Spirit of God, would you fill us anew?
Amen
