What Are Core Values?

Dear LifeSpring Family,

Earlier this week, our group discussed lesson 12 in the Lead Well study series. The title of the lesson is What Are Core Values? From the lesson, it reminds us that:

Core values can be understood through a variety of images. They are like:

  • Anchors that hold a person steady when other currents pull strong.
  • Inner compasses that provide direction in making decisions.
  • Lenses through which the world is viewed.
  • Matches that can light a fire in a person’s soul, motivating them to take action (or not act).

I made the observation that we all are guided by our core values. Whether we articulate them, write them down, share them with others, are intentional about them, are conscious about them or not, we are all guided by our “core values”. And to prove this, the lesson encourages us to discover our conscious or unconscious core values by asking the following questions:

  • What do we spend our money on, after our basic needs are covered?
  • What would others say our core values are?
  • What are our patterns of behaviour? What do these reveal about what we value?
  • When we’ve completed our work and essential household tasks, what do we spend our time on?
  • What do we pray for most frequently?
  • How do we make decisions? What (or who) is our priority in making decisions?
  • What situations make us feel trapped? Why?

As you ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what are your core values, “listen” to what Father God and our Lord Jesus says to you.

Grace upon grace,

Jerry
