I had an essay prompt that ran along the lines of “What do you expect to be remembered for and why?” It really got me thinking, If I died today, what would people say at my funeral? It’s a morbid topic, I know, but bear with me.
The “Correct Christian Answer” would obviously be “people saw Christ in me”. As I was trying to envision what that would look like on paper, a thought I had was, In what scenarios have people seen Christ in me? To be honest, I couldn’t think of many.
I know people will say that I did a lot for others and, I suppose, for God, but the focus would still be on me. It’s easy to place more attention on the works we do than on the One who enables us to do the works.
God has given me initiative, strength, and wisdom to do a lot of things, yet I somehow don’t give God as much credit as I should.
This reminded me of LifeSpring’s 415 Food Hub involvement. We could have done so because “it was the right thing to do” or “we wanted to make a difference”, but we made it abundantly clear from the start that we serve at the Food Hub and in other ministries because God called us to it, and because we want to be the hands and feet of Jesus.
And that is what I want to be remembered for. Not that I did a lot of good things, but that God used me to fulfill His will, doing good things in the process. Now, the challenge is to live it out.
